take-off from Francistown, Botswana 4 April, 1974, due to

Leased Swissair .1997. "Outeniqua" In SAA service this aircraft was
fitted with a strengthened heavy duty floor which added 400 pounds
to her weight and utilized to support the DC-7B service to
Australia. The DC-7B was notorious for engine failures and the long
flight over water had to be supported with spare engines ready to be
flown to either Mauritius, Cocos Island or Perth, if needed. The
DC-7B service to Australia commenced in 1957. Last SAAF DC-4 flown
on 3 August 1994. Crew of the final DC-4 flight was F/Sgt Mannetjies
Wilken, WO1 Theo Munro, Maj HP Meyer, Maj Rodney King, Maj Marius
van den Heever, Lt Iain Findlay and L/Cpl Marco Gerli. |
