Below is a list of DC-4 / C-54 and the DC-4M North Star/Argonaut, built by Canadair, that have carried African civil or military registrations. Five Argonauts served with East African Airways, whilst four others flew with the Royal Rhodesian Air Force.

Bought by Douglas Aircraft Company 13 December, 1945 and converted to DC-4, conversion No. 24. Bought by Delta Airlines 2April, 1946 registered as N37475. Bought by Pacific Northern Airlines 27 February, 1953. Bought by Overseas National Airways in 1957, registered as N410NA, named "Loma D". Sold to Witwatersrand Native Labour Association of Rhodesia (WENELA) and registered ZS-CLN in 1960. Reregistered VP-YST March 1961, reregistered September 1968 as A2-ZER. Crashed two minutes after take-off from Francistown, Botswana 4 April, 1974, due to contaminated fuel. 78 of 84 killed. SAA 25 March 1946 "Tafelberg". Sold to Aero Air ZS-NUR 5.1995; to Dutch Dakota Association PH-DDS, but reverted to ZS-AUA on 15 April 2002 with Springbok Classic Air. To Rovos Air. To Skyclass Aviation, "Tafelberg". First ever aircraft to touch down at Jan Smuts Airport on 17 April 1952. Final DC-4 to operate a commercial service with SAA in 1966. In SAAF service this aircraft was referred to as "Spook" on account of her electronic warfare operations use with 44 squadron.

SAA 10 May 1946 "Outeniqua". Sold back to SA Airways ZS-AUB. Airworthy. SAA Historic Flight. Then donated to the SAA Museum Society end of 2007. Operated by Skyclass Aviation. Leased Swissair .1997. "Outeniqua" In SAA service this aircraft was fitted with a strengthened heavy duty floor which added 400 pounds to her weight and utilized to support the DC-7B service to Australia. The DC-7B was notorious for engine failures and the long flight over water had to be supported with spare engines ready to be flown to either Mauritius, Cocos Island or Perth, if needed. The DC-7B service to Australia commenced in 1957. Last SAAF DC-4 flown on 3 August 1994. Crew of the final DC-4 flight was F/Sgt Mannetjies Wilken, WO1 Theo Munro, Maj HP Meyer, Maj Rodney King, Maj Marius van den Heever, Lt Iain Findlay and L/Cpl Marco Gerli.
